Large 1889 French Neoclassical Architectural Relief Panel by Maison Simyan

Large 1889 French Neoclassical Architectural Relief Panel by Maison Simyan

An exceptional and museum-grade late-Victorian grand-scale architectural relief panel dating to 1889. Beautifully executed in a highly specialized Reconstituted Marble, this rare Neoclassical piece features a finely detailed scene depicting Cupid and Bacchus, after the incised signature of the master Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.

The Pedigree & Maker:

This panel is attributed to the celebrated Parisian workshop Maison Simyan. Famed for pioneering commercial architectural stucco, composite stone, and reconstituted staff mouldings for luxury French Boiserie interiors, Simyan was at the absolute forefront of material sciences engineering during the late 19th century.

The reverse matrix features an authentic, cast-in bronze prize medal by Louis Bottée. This medal design is highly significant to collectors as one of the very first official world's fair medals to prominently feature an engraving of the newly constructed Eiffel Tower, which served as the grand entrance arch to the 1889 Paris World's Fair (Exposition Universelle). This crisp impression indicates the piece was cast directly from Simyan's award-winning exhibition master moulds.

Provenance & Architectural Context:

The piece boasts excellent regional provenance, having been salvaged from a grand villa in the historic enclave of Clifton Park, Rotherham—the exclusive 19th-century neighbourhood built by prominent South Yorkshire industrial steel and iron barons.

Originally engineered to sit completely flush inside luxury French Boiserie wood panelling over a fireplace mantel or grand doorway, the panel features a stunning, deep coal-smoke patina nestled beautifully within the drapery folds—a clear testament to its rich Victorian fireplace history. Because it is executed in reconstituted marble, it remains fully weatherproof and heat-resistant, making it highly versatile for modern installation over fireplaces, in luxury bathrooms, or within an outdoor garden loggia.
