Late 19th Century Flemish Baroque Revival Gesso Wall Mirror
An exceptional, highly decorative late 19th-century wall mirror in the classic Flemish Baroque or Dutch Revival taste. Crafted from a historic timber core and deeply molded gesso (composition) with hand-stippled panels, it features a striking architectural "stepped" silhouette with geometric protruding corners and a sloping cushion profile.
The original gilding has aged beautifully over the last century, developing a rich, muted patina with subtle wear that reveals the dark under-layers beneath the intricate arabesque foliage patterns. The level of intricacy and preservation is excellent; the dense, high-relief gesso work gives it an incredibly ornate, "jewel-like" feel.
The reverse side remains completely authentic, retaining its original hand-sawn, dark wood backing panels and historic joinery. Because the heavy, hand-beveled glass mirror plate and rough-hewn backing planks are entirely original, this piece remains a pristine, unaltered collector's item. With its compact proportions, this mirror makes a striking standalone accent piece or a dramatic anchor in a modern gallery wall pairing.
