42cm x 14cm 17 x 5.5 inches

Arita ware, or Arita Yaki (有田焼)

Meiji Period A pair of antique Japanese Arita Imari porcelain vases, available as lamps. Overglazed hand painted and brightly coloured enamel bodies in red blues, greens, pinks and purples with gilt highlights on stylized grounds and with alternating vignettes of exotic birds and landscapes.  The borders around the panels are decorated with geometric patterns with flowers and butterflies.   Wide collars slightly flaring upwards typical of Imari vases of the period. Both signed to their undersides.

Their craftmanship required great skill, especially in applying the overglaze colours delicately and with precision, resulting in a style that was both understated and sophisticated. Now converted sympathetically without damage to vase(s)! In excellent condition with aged patina and wear, no breaks, damage or repairs. PAT antique brass hardware and braided antique flex as standard.
